The Sacred Heart Alumnae Association of Rochester, NY, (Prince Street) recently announced that it will disband following at least 111 years of operation. The Alumnae Association survived the school’s closure in 1969 and its membership has traditionally gathered annually for mass at the Prince Street Chapel.

The Academy, founded in 1855, moved to Prince Street in 1864. The cornerstone of its French Gothic Chapel was laid on June 16, 1890, with dedication following in August, 1891. The "Alumnae Association of the Rochester Convent of the Sacred Heart" was established in 1904. Successors of that organization have continuously cherished and honored Prince Street and the Sacred Heart religious who staffed it and whom it produced. Prince Street, in fact, is known for the large number of graduates who became Religious of the Sacred Heart. The Chapel itself in recent years has been maintained as a non-sectarian ceremonial and gathering space, with its architectural beauty and magnificent stained glass and other decor well preserved.

The Association’s discontinuance, members fear, will mark their last opportunity to gather across graduating class lines and are urging all who may be interested to attend this year’s mass, Sunday, September 24th, at 11:30 a.m., followed by brunch at the Country Club of Rochester.

The Association requests registrations by September 1st, accompanied by a check for $15.00 per member, plus an additional $35 for each guest. Please include contact information and class year and mail to Judy Conley, 311 Wyndale Road, Rochester, NY 14617. Make checks payable to ASH/Judy Conley.
